However, for those with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or those simply avoiding gluten for personal reasons, an important question arises: is nutritional yeast gluten-free?
Understanding Nutritional Yeast
Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast, typically a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Unlike brewer’s yeast or baker’s yeast, nutritional yeast is cultivated specifically for its nutritional value.
Nutritional yeast and brewer’s yeast come from the same yeast strain, but the yeast cells are processed differently.Â
In Brewer's yeast the yeast is still alive. With nutritional yeast, the yeast cells are killed during the process of manufacturing it, and you won’t find any living yeast in the final product.
How Do We Make Our Organic Unfortified Nutritional Yeast?
Our organic non-fortified nutritional yeast is derived from organic non-GMO primary yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
The fermentation has been carried out on either organic sugar beet or organic sugar cane molasses, both of which are used as raw material.
Our yeast is fermented in stainless steel tanks. The production is a closed system: we start with a pure culture which is then grown on organic molasses and on a nitrogen source. After fermentation is done we use separators and water to wash the yeast from the molasses and the rest of the water.
The yeast will then be dried and packaged.
This plant based protein source is known to have a rich tangy, cheesy, creamy, nutty flavor and great flaky texture, making it a perfect addition to your favorite meal.
Is Nutritional Yeast Healthy?
Nutritional yeast is commonly used as a dietary supplement and flavor enhancer, offering a host of benefits.

Gluten and Its Sources
According to Celiac Disease Foundation, "Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat (wheatberries, durum, emmer, semolina, spelt, farina, farro, graham, KAMUT® khorasan wheat and einkorn), rye, barley and triticale – a cross between wheat and rye.Â
Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together. Gluten can be found in many types of foods, even ones that would not be expected."
Gluten-Free Foods
Many foods are naturally gluten free, for example fruits and vegetables, eggs, beans, seeds, nuts, non-processed meats, fish, poultry, most dairy products, buckwheat, quinoa, rice etc.
Foods with Gluten
Bread, cakes, candies, pasta, fast food, cereals, store bought salad dressings & sauces, and many other processed food contain gluten.
Is Nutritional Yeast Gluten-Free?
The inherent nature of nutritional yeast is gluten-free. Since it is not derived from wheat, barley, or rye, it does not naturally contain gluten.
However, the gluten-free status of any food product also depends on the manufacturing processes and potential cross-contamination.
Factors to Consider:
-
Source and Production: Reliable manufacturers ensure that the yeast is grown on gluten-free media. The growth substrate can vary, but to maintain gluten-free status, it should be free of gluten-containing grains.
-
Cross-Contamination: Facilities that process nutritional yeast might also handle gluten-containing products. Dedicated gluten-free production lines or stringent cleaning protocols are essential to prevent cross-contamination.
-
Certification: Gluten-free certification by third-party organizations provides an additional layer of assurance. Products labeled “certified gluten-free” have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they meet the threshold for gluten content, typically less than 20 parts per million (ppm).
Always Read Labels to Choose the Right Product
To ensure you’re consuming gluten-free nutritional yeast, it’s crucial to read labels carefully. Look for terms like “gluten-free” or “certified gluten-free.” Additionally, check for any disclaimers regarding potential cross-contamination.
For those with celiac disease, even trace amounts of gluten can trigger symptoms and damage. Choosing certified gluten-free products is the best way to ensure safety.
Conclusion
So, is nutritional yeast gluten free?
Yes, it is inherently gluten-free, but the final product's safety depends on the source, production practices, and potential for cross-contamination.
By opting for certified gluten-free products and reputable brands, consumers can enjoy the nutritional benefits (like extra protein and extra vitamins & minerals) of this versatile ingredient without compromising their gluten-free diet.
Nutritional yeast can be a safe, gluten-free addition to your cooking and diet, provided you choose products from trusted sources and pay attention to certification and labelling.
Always consult with healthcare providers or nutrition experts if you have concerns about gluten in your diet.
